On November 13, 2024, The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued alert FIN-2024-Alert004 entitled, Fraud Schemes Involving Deepfake Media Targeting Financial Institutions. In this six-page document, FINCEN warns the financial industry in the U.S. of one of the gravest potential threats to financial institutions and their ability to authenticate the identity of its customers. Artificial intelligence has mostly been an ally to financial institutions globally in analyzing large amounts of data to help detect, prevent and solve fraud, financial and cybercriminal activities. But make no mistake about it, AI in the hands of the criminal can have catastrophic effects on the financial and retail sector. In this training, we will look at how AI enabled deepfakes and voice cloning may impact multi-factor authentication going forward. We will also explore how these weaponized tools can further enhance criminals’ successes in luring victims into a deeper spell when it comes to romance and investment fraud schemes.
